Is there an easy way to take a picture that is 240x320 and import it into an MX-980? Simple cut and paste doesn't seem to work...

you have to make a sub folder under galleries in the editor. then put all your custom pics in the folder. when in the main editing screen right click on a button and select "move to back". then click on the background, go to the image section on the right, select import. it should automatically open the galleries folder where you will see the sub folder you created, open it, and select the image you want to import. then of course right click on the new back ground and select "move to back", in order to get your button back to the front.

i cant remember the exact size the images need to be, but i find its best to crop them, then resize the pixels, as to keep the images from looking wide or long.

theres probably a better way, but this works for me.

OK, did that, called it "backgrounds"

when in

image section on the right, select import.

I just have a blank page, so I don't think I need to move buttons back. Where is the "image section on the right??"

Any import I try looks for *.rcf files "remote collection files"?

Appreciate your help!

far right, in the middle, right above where you list all the commands for a selected button.

files"?

i havent seen that message (i didnt have to change anything in the name of my images to make them work), so i'm not sure where in the editor you are selecting "import image" from , but try the area i mentioned above if you arent already. its a little arrow button (there are two, one up and one down) and when you scroll over it, it shows "import". click on this and a small box should pop up with your galleries folder etc.

sorry tom, i'm not at my home PC so dont have the editor in front of me... i'm sure s/one will chime in with a clearer explanation.

See where I've circled in red? If you don't have that Edit and Label Buttons window active, hit F4.

You don't have to have the image saved to any specific folder, just know where it's located; I save mine to the specific folder I create for each remote type labeled for instance 'MX980 Images' or you can simply save to your desktop for simplicity for now. The constraints are 240x320 for backgrounds and in .bmp, .gif, .jpg or .png format.

Click on the 'down' arrow that I circled in red after you've clicked on the background you want to change (click the background on the window to the right of the remote, i.e. just the LCD representation, not the image on the remote, it will outline in red dashes if it's active for editing). An Open window pops up when you click down arrow. Navigate to the folder you saved your appropriate 240x320 image, click Open, image will be placed on the remote now.

The answer here is frightfully simple. So simple, in fact, that it's one of those things you'd probably immediately dismiss as "nah, that's not it" before you ever stop to explore it.

The background is just a button. So putting an image into the background is as easy as putting an image into any other button. The thing is, the background is 100% buried underneath the other buttons on the page. So to manipulate the background directly, you first have to move one of the active buttons out of the way.

1. Choose any of the active buttons, select it, and press CTRL+B.
The button will disappear behind the background, but it's still there.
2. Now, INSIDE the space of the button you just sent to Back, click.
The large button containing the background is now selected.
3. Using the Edit & Label Buttons pane, you can now import an image to the background button, just like any other button.
4. When you're done, select the background button again and press CTRL+B.
The background returns to the back, showing all your buttons again.

Now... there's also a little trick you can use to make this even easier. The trick carries over from the Alpha template on MX-3000, and it works like a charm here too.

If you look in the tree view, the name of the page in all URC MX-980 templates also happens to be the name of the background image. So for Page3 in the tree, the background image is named page3.jpg (this assumes that you've turned OFF Window's idiotic habit of hiding the extensions of known file types).

Here's how you can use this to your advantage. If you want to change the background image of Page2, just go create a 240x320 jpg named Page2.jpg and place it in a folder somewhere on your computer. Now, in the tree view of MX-980 editor, select the device that contains the Page2 you want to change. Right click, and from the context menu, choose Tools>Image Replace. This displays a dialog box that lets you browse to the folder where you placed that new file you called "Page2.jpg." When you do, MX-Editor will look in that folder, see that there's a file called "Page2.jpg," and then it will search the entire device you selected to see if any buttons there have images called "Page2.jpg." If it finds any, it replaces the existing image with the one in the folder.

Viola! New background on Page2, with no button manipulation at all!

Eagle eyed MX-980 Editor users will immediately wonder, "hey, could I use this Image Replace command to effectively "skin" an entire MX-980 device? And the answer is yes! A while back I posted a fairly detailed explanation of the process here on Remote Central:

Skinning MX-980 Templates

Best regards,
Dale

Ya my interest is tweaked as well.... Looks as though you have a few items that would require 2-way communication to be considered useful. eg: the message folders and the weather icon.

Is there something that joe-sixpack isn't being told...?

Indeed, add me the list!!!!

how do I get the screen to display all those goodies: weather, volume level, mini-guide, date/time, etc?

Thanks to all who elaborated. My "Image" window was not open. When I get back to my laptop, I will go to work. Thanks to so many of you.

I notice on the screen that it says Friday July 20th.. which would have been 2007 ( the simpsons movie is what made me look into it)

which leads me to believe that its just a dummy screen made to look like 2 way communication.. or its just an old screenshot (I hope thats what it is) as that would be a nice feature .... It is very windows mobile-esque

So it turns out the image edit box was not there - F3 wakes it up.

I just wanted to put some pics on the "front" page to wow the client.

Made a device called "Pictures"
Added a handful of pages
Imported 240x320 images to each page
Client can browse them from the "Pictures" button on the watch page
MAIN OFF button ends with a page jump to one of the pics.

Just for fun.

It can sell a remote for you too if you show it to a client with a pic of a kid or a dog on it! Yep, I have one guy's dog on his T3, another guy with his wife, another with grandkids.... just another hook.

cool beans tom, glad you got'er figured out!

i've also set up a device that is just pages of pictures to flip through, just to WOW the guests! lol

hmmm.... imagine being a settler 200 hundred or whatever yrs ago, and your guests were native indians, and just how easy it would have been to WOW them.

Deep Thoughts, with Stealth X.
